Everything You Need to Know About Conforming in DaVinci Resolve

Daniel Bañuelos

In the world of post-production, conforming is that crucial step that can turn a mess of disconnected clips into a perfectly synchronized symphony. If you’ve ever felt like a detective trying to match footage to timelines, this article is for you. Get ready for a comprehensive and, why not, entertaining guide on how to master conforming in DaVinci Resolve.

What is Conforming and Why Should You Care?

Conforming is the process of connecting clips on a timeline with their original media files, ensuring everything is in sync, organized, and ready for the magic of color correction and grading.

In simple terms, it's like that friend who always returns the stuff you borrow… but much more reliable (when you know how to do it). Without proper conforming, you run the risk of disconnected clips, broken transitions, and angry editors.

Formats and Effects DaVinci Resolve Loves (and Not So Much)

DaVinci Resolve supports formats like XML, AAF, and EDL, but not all effects and transitions survive the journey. Basic transitions like a cross dissolve are safe, but forget about crazy effects you made in your NLE.

Solution? “Burn” those effects. That is, export the clips with the effects applied as new video files and voila, problem solved.

Step by Step Forming

1. Import your Timeline

DaVinci Resolve will automatically attempt to connect clips in your timeline to files in your Media Pool. If all goes well, congratulations: you've earned a coffee!

2. Relink Missing Media

Missing a clip? Use the “Change Source Folder” feature to tell Resolve where to find those naughty files.

3. Check your conformity

Load the offline reference you created and compare it to your timeline. You can use split views, such as split-screen or checkerboard, to make sure everything is where it should be.

Common Problems and How to Fix Them

1. Reel Conflicts

If Resolve doesn’t know which clip to use (due to duplicate names, for example), you’ll get an error. Use the “Reconform from Bins” feature to manually choose which clip belongs to which section of the timeline.

2. Missing or Unlinked Clips

Enable “Auto Conform Missing Clips” in the preferences to have Resolve try to fix it automatically. It’s like a “fix my mess” button.

3. Mixed Frame Rates

Set the timeline frame rate before importing your media. Resolve can handle mixed frame rates, but make sure they're set correctly to avoid any surprises.

Tools That Will Make Your Life Easier

  • Reconform from Bins : Ideal for when you have multiple versions of the same clip in different folders or disks.

  • Change Source Folder : Perfect for updating media paths without losing your mind.

  • Offline Comparison : A neat feature to compare your timeline with your offline reference and make sure everything is in order.

Advanced Tips for Large Projects

  • Use Metadata : You can use the “Assist using Reel Name” feature and accurate timecodes.

  • Organize your Media Pool : Create clear, logical folders for your clips. No more “Folder 1” and “Miscellaneous Clips”.

  • Streamline Collaborative Workflow : If you work in a team, make sure everyone has access to the same files and settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if my clips are not automatically relinked?

Use the “Reconform from Media Storage” command to manually search for missing clips on your hard drive.

How do I handle unsupported effects?

Bake the effects in your NLE before importing the timeline. This makes them part of the video clip and ensures they don't get lost.

Can Resolve handle different frame rates?

Yes, but make sure you set the timeline speed correctly before importing.
